The Woodcock is highly prized by sportsmen, cooks and artists alike. This magical bird is a wonderful gem of British sporting quarry.
Following the first full moon in November, woodcock travel in large numbers to our shores from Scandanavia and Russia. As cold weather spells hit mainland Britain, Woodcock instinctively continue to migrate further west. With numbers increasing from 78,500 resident breeding pairs to 1.4 million overwintering birds, it is during this period that Woodcock are at their peak.
Such is the respect for this bird that in very hard winters shooting bans are sometimes applied. We therefore only offer Woodcock shooting when the numbers are deemed sufficiently high and when weather conditions are not too taxing on them.
